Controlling Type 2 Diabetes

If you received a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, you may be able to change the progress of the disease. Type 2 Diabetes is the one where you don’t need insulin shots. However, you should focus on weight loss and daily aerobic exercise.

Weight Loss:
Patients who have drastically lowered their weight with bariatric surgery, noticed their diabetes symptoms alleviated, but nonsurgical changes can also be beneficial. Losing about 10% of body weight can have a dramatic effect on blood-sugar and insulin levels. Even if someone is not overweight, losing 5% of body weight can improve blood-sugar levels. Studies show that a low-carb, low-glycemic (sugar), high-fiber diet promotes weight loss in diabetics. Avoid carbohydrates in starches like bread, pasta, and sugary desserts. High-fiber foods include: beans, yams, nuts, bran, and vegetables.

Daily Aerobic Exercise:
One of my favorite things to do is exercising aerobic style. Exercise enhances the muscles’ ability to soak up glucose from the bloodstream. You need 30 to 40 minutes of aerobic exercise every day, to improve your body’s responsiveness to insulin. Before beginning any exercise program, check with your doctor.
